What is IRC?
IRC is a global
network for people to talk in real time using text. If you
have ever seen people on TV talking on the internet and always
wanted to do it yourself, then IRC is for you!
What is a
server?
A server is
a connection point for an IRC client. Networks consist of several
servers located around the world for a fast enjoyable IRC experience.
To see a list of servers connected to the network you're on, type
</links> or </map>.
What is a client?
An IRC client
is a program such as Pirch (for windows) or Ircle (for Macs) which
allows you connect to an IRC server. Our "Newbies"
page will link you with the irc client of your choice.
How much
does IRC cost?
It's FREE! How
about that... you get to use the best technology on the internet
absolutely free of charge!
What is a
channel?
A channel is
a chat room for people on IRC to meet and have fun. The topics
in any channel varies, and the managers of any given channel are
there on a volunteer basis (Esprit does not allow Sex or Warez
channels).
How do I
connect to a server?
This procedure
varies depending on your client (Read the Help files that came
with your client), but generally the command </server irc.esprit.net>
will work, where "irc.esprit.net" is the server you
are connecting to (see our "Servers
" page for current Esprit servers)

join a channel?
Type </join
#nameofchannel>
How do I
get a list of channels?
Type </list>
What is a
bot?
A bot is a automated
program normally used to hold a channel open and grant operator
status to individuals on the bot's user list. (X2 is the name
of the channel service bot on Esprit; go to #Services for questions
relating to X2).
Why do some
people have a @ beside their name?
The @ signifies
that someone is a channel operator. A channel operator is a person
who keeps the flow of conversation going and has the power to
kick or ban an offending individual from the channel they have
operator status in. Using Ircle, channel operators are listed
in red (default color) in the user list box.
How do I
get purple text or do an action?
Actions are
used to give animation to IRC, they are normally shown in purple
or gray in mIRC or Pirch. To do an action, type </me Action>
Where do
I go for help?
The channels
#newbies and #Services are good places to go for on-line help.
Check the channel list for particular help channels.
