What is IRC?

IRC is a global network for people to talk in real time using text. If you have ever seen people on TV talking on the internet and always wanted to do it yourself, then IRC is for you!

What is a server?

A server is a connection point for an IRC client. Networks consist of several servers located around the world for a fast enjoyable IRC experience. To see a list of servers connected to the network you're on, type </links> or </map>.

What is a client?

An IRC client is a program such as Pirch (for windows) or Ircle (for Macs) which allows you connect to an IRC server. Our "Newbies" page will link you with the irc client of your choice.

How much does IRC cost?

It's FREE! How about that... you get to use the best technology on the internet absolutely free of charge!

What is a channel?

A channel is a chat room for people on IRC to meet and have fun. The topics in any channel varies, and the managers of any given channel are there on a volunteer basis (Esprit does not allow Sex or Warez channels).

How do I connect to a server?

This procedure varies depending on your client (Read the Help files that came with your client), but generally the command </server irc.esprit.net> will work, where "irc.esprit.net" is the server you are connecting to (see our "Servers "  page for current Esprit servers)

How do I join a channel?

Type </join #nameofchannel>

How do I get a list of channels?

Type </list>

What is a bot?

A bot is a automated program normally used to hold a channel open and grant operator status to individuals on the bot's user list. (X2 is the name of the channel service bot on Esprit; go to #Services for questions relating to X2).

Why do some people have a @ beside their name?

The @ signifies that someone is a channel operator. A channel operator is a person who keeps the flow of conversation going and has the power to kick or ban an offending individual from the channel they have operator status in. Using Ircle, channel operators are listed in red (default color) in the user list box.

How do I get purple text or do an action?

Actions are used to give animation to IRC, they are normally shown in purple or gray in mIRC or Pirch. To do an action, type </me Action>

Where do I go for help?

The channels #newbies and #Services are good places to go for on-line help. Check the channel list for particular help channels.
